Abstract

Shortcomings of the medical knowledge system that have given rise to what is referred to as “the art of medicine”. At its core is decision-making based on inconsistent provider knowledge, variable experience and an array of biases. The excitement around AI, around data, and around learning, is bringing the era of the so-called art of medicine to an end. The era of AI medicine begins while modern healthcare equipment generates lots of health data, and this is where statistics and machine learning algorithms can help. In this talk, I will start with talking about how LCP (Lab for Computational Physiology) at MIT creates communities across disciplines to derive knowledge from data routinely collected in the process of care in order to understand health and disease better. Within communities, healthcare practitioners, computer scientists, staticians, engineers, and social scientists have opportunities to solve problems together. Then I will share a couple of works I have done and my experience when collaborating with clinicians and medical experts.
