TIGP (BIO)—The Domestication and Expansion History of Mungbean and Adzuki Bean: Evidence From Population Genomics

Abstract

While it is well known that the domestication process transformed wild plants into the crops human desired, the historical and geographical context of domestication and later range expansion remain elusive. In this talk I will discuss our two recent works. We showed that mungbean did not simply radiate from the domestication center as purely expected under human intervention. Instead, the expansion followed a specific route governed by the climatic conditions across Asia, and cultivar phenotypes were shaped by the distinct environments and human preferences specific to each region. In Adzuki bean, we resolved the incongruence between archeological and genetic evidences and settled the long-term debate whether this crop was first domesticated in Japan or China.
