Abstract

Sustainability is a deeply social and gendered issue. This presentation focuses on the topic of masculinity and climate action. As a group, men are statistically less likely to be engaged in climate action and have a higher carbon footprint. The impacts of climate change are also gendered, with women as a group being more affected. Drawing on sociological concepts of hegemonic and caring masculinities, this talk examines how traditional norms of masculinity in the Global North that emphasise strength, control, and independence can inhibit climate engagement. It also considers the historical and cultural links between masculinity and environmental exploitation, the masculinist framing of science-driven climate solutions, and the potential for more inclusive, caring forms of masculinity to reshape sustainability efforts.

This session will begin with a brief presentation on the issues, followed by group reflection and knowledge-sharing on gender norms and sustainability actions in Australia and Taiwan. The discussion will include some short creative activities, so please bring something to write with (pen and paper, or laptop).
