Abstract

Data science is all the rage in the media. Around the world, companies are hiring data scientists and universities are forming new data science units. ????? Many of us, statisticians, ask: why and how should we engage in data science? Building on historical facts of intimate connections among statistics, computer science and domain knowledge, I advocate in this talk all-hands-on-deck engagement of statisticians in data science to anchor statistics in modern data problems and for the healthy development of statistics as an intellectual field. I would like to start with some ideas on how to engage as an individual and as a group, and then invite audience to join the discussion to arrive at better ideas that are appropriate for Taiwan.
