Abstract
Securing external funding via grant application is one that academic scientists love to hate, because rejections often result in frustrations, if not depression. Yet, few PIs (postdocs and PhD students too, for that matter) receive formal proposal-writing training. And, of course, the result is not pretty, especially considering that success rates for acquiring an US NIH grant are often 10% or less. This talk, the first one, attempts to unveil the art of proposal writing via establishing its inherent concepts and principles which, although no rocket science, often appear mysterious and daunting to most proposal writers. In the second talk, a short (5-page) US-funded proposal will be dissected for illuminating, in a concrete manner, how a proposal can be constructed in a more fundable manner.
