Abstract
In microbial communities, species compete for resource, space and even actively target each other by toxins. How to predicting the outcome of competition has been a long-standing question. Lotka-Volterra equation has been widely used for modeling species interaction, but most theoretical studies focus on two or three species. In this class, I will introduce the classical results for two species competition. Next, I will introduce the May-Leonard system, where three species dominant each other in a cyclic manner, known as the Rock-Scissor-Paper (RSP) model. Finally, I will present our own ongoing modeling project on how RSP triad interacts with an invader species, known as the I+RSP system. Our goal is to explore the potential complexity of 4-species interaction, and understanding the dynamics of a complex community in future.
